Anderson's Grocery

By Trevor Olsen

Have you ever been to a grocery store? How about Anderson’s Grocery? Well, this store offers more than you would imagine.  It has all the raw necessities like laundry soap, food, drink, sauces, mixes and even DVDs.

Their prices have only changed over the years due to inflation.  Other than that their prices have pretty much stayed the same.  Anderson’s Grocery is located only in Republic, not anywhere else.  The main competition Anderson’s has is Costco in Spokane and Wal-Mart in Colville. Their prices are similar to those in most big cities like Colville and Spokane.

Anderson’s Grocery store affects the community by providing service for customers so they don't have to go 60 miles to get their groceries. The business has changed over the years because of overhead expenses. Their most popular products are everyday household goods like milk, eggs, and bread. They keep their customers interested by having good, friendly service. The forms of payment they accept are Visa, MasterCard, E.B.T, food stamps, cash, and checks. Andersons also has products for children.

Thank you for taking your time to read this article.  Remember to shop at Anderson's Grocery store to get good deals and friendly service and also to not have to drive 60 miles to get your groceries.

Black Beach Resort

By Jesse King

It is a hot summer weekend and you and the family want to go camping but you need a place to go.  You decide the family could go to the good old City of Republic and visit your Grandma.  She would be very delighted if the family came to see her.  Then you think to yourself, “Where do we camp?”  You check in the phone book and call Black Beach Resort to see if there are any sites still open.  They tell you that there are a few open so you jump on it and go check it out.  As you pull in you where you see the sign that says Black Beach Resort, you see that the grass is green and there are little butterflies buzzing around from flower to flower.  The lake is clean and looks beautiful.  There are friendly people everywhere riding jet skies and fishing.  You decide that this is definitely where you want to camp.

Blacks Beach Resort is located on 80 Black Beach Road Republic Washington 99166.  The owners are Al and Sharon Collins and they can be reached at 509-775-3989.

Clarence's Rock Shop

By Daniel Moses

What is a rock shop?  Just a place that sells rocks?  Well, you haven't been to this rock shop.  This one not only sells rocks, it sells the best rocks—from amber all the way to zinc.  If you don't like rocks they also may even trade some items for different things.  For instance, the owner is willing to trade some rock—like if you have a very good amber piece he may be willing to trade some of his best rocks for it.  If you have nothing to trade you can always look around at old antiques or other items.

If you think that the Rock Shop is only open on the weekdays, well you are so wrong my friend!  He is actually only open on weekends so you can come on down and have it not interfere with work on the weekdays.  This business has been around 11 years or so—11 YEARS!!!  So, if you have the time and the money then come down to the Clarence’s Rock Shop where you can find the best deal for rocks.  What is a rock, you ask? Some people think that a rock is just a hunk of junk. Well, these people are wrong—these rocks are some of most priceless rocks that you have ever seen.

What is a good inventory?  Just a simple few rocks, or maybe just a few antiques?  Nope, Clarence’s Rock Shop has a lot of different rocks and a many different antiques.  He also has the neatest rock book holders, some made of petrified wood and some look like quartz.  You might ask what he does during the week if he’s not open.  He is a trucker, but before that he was an equipment operator.  Clarence says that his most favorite rock is amethyst.  He mostly gets all of his rocks from the big rock show in Arizona; the antiques he gets from traveling.  If you come on down, I bet you will find that Clarence’s Rock Shop is the best rock shop in this part of the country.

Comptech Unlimited

By Jessica Heaton

If you're reading this, you most likely live in Republic.  And if you live in Republic, you probably know that our resources are low.  And with low resources come problems.  As a small town, we don't have many computer businesses around here.  We don't have many people around who even know how to work a computer.  And with that comes even more problems.  In this century, most things now run on computers, things such as medical records, school records, etc. and without people around to fix our computers for us, nothing is going to be accessible.  But lucky for us, we have someone.

George Bonney is the only owner and worker of Comptech Unlimited, but he has enough experience and talent to go around.  Comptech Unlimited has been in business for almost ten years now, offering not only computer repair, but also tutoring, programming, and explaining and programming other devices.

Don't have enough time to wait for him to arrive?  Bring your computer right into the shop and pick it up in the next day or so.  Can't hook it back up?  When you find more time call up George and he'll be right over to help.

Cora's Creations

By Gabriella Maycumber

Are you one for natural, handcrafted goods?  I'm sure you appreciate buying items which you can be sure are of good quality.  What if you could buy new handmade goods, handspun yarn, knitted or crocheted hats, bags, scarves, and ponchos, even cell phone covers?  What if you could buy all-natural lotions, creams, lip and body balms, and much more?  And what if you could buy all of these products of excellent quality at great prices?  Allow me to introduce you to Cora's Creations.  Cora VanSlyke, the owner/founder, is a talented knitter, spinner, and, well, she just likes to make things.

Cora's Creations has not been in business for very long, nearly a year, but the people there have been making these products for years.  Not only have they become very good at what they do, but they add a personal touch and a fresh spin to everything they sell.  Cora specializes in wool-work, so spinning and knitting with wool are what they mostly do down there.  For example, you can buy a beautiful wool-knit felted bag for usually about $20 to $35 dollars, depending on the size.

The business is still relatively small; as I said earlier, it has not been in business for very long.  Though this can be a downside, there are definite advantages to being small and new.  They offer an unusual option of custom-made products on demand.  Of course, ready-made goods are available all the time.  Other products include balms and lotions.  The herbal branch is relatively new, and there are not many products yet offered in this area.  They are working hard and exploring through it to learn what would make for the best products, though.

Cora's Creations is very much in its youth, though it has expanded a lot since it first started.  It is a home-run business and does not have a store.  This is a renovation they are looking to make, but not until the business has become much bigger.  They are in business alone and competition isn't really competition—local knitters and spinners love to work together!  Products may currently be bought by contacting them or at their booth, which is set up at fairs and special events around Northwest Washington. To contact Cora's Creations, send an e-mail to coras-creations@hotmail.com.

Dianne's Garden and Greenhouse

By Juliauna Largent

Nothing brings a smile to a person’s face more than flowers.  So make someone smile today and buy them some flowers from Diane's Garden and Greenhouse!

Diane's Garden and Greenhouse has been in business for 20 years.  Diane started this business because she likes flowers.  It all started by growing flowers on a windowsill, then she built a little greenhouse, then it got filled up so she built an even bigger greenhouse.  The business has been getting bigger over the years.  Diane enjoys it and all the people she meets.  Diane gives out information and sells flowers for all ages.  She starts to grow flowers in January or February underneath lights, then in April they go out to the greenhouse.

Diane sells more than just flowers; she also sells garden veggies, fruit, and perennials from her garden.  The type of fruit she sells is mini-watermelons, cantaloupe, cherries, apples, plums, peaches, apricots, pears, blackberries, raspberries and tomatoes.  The types of veggies she sells are pumpkins, cucumber, zucchini, radishes, carrots, potatoes, corn, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, and much, much more.  Petunias sell the best—she plants about 2,000 a year.  She sells unique and old flowers that most greenhouses don't sell anymore.  Diane's prices for the flowers are slightly lower than the prices in big cities.  She makes enough money to keep buying more stuff in order to grow more flowers the next year.  Diane gets a lot of her inventory from a warehouse in Spokane and from professional catalogs.

Diane takes cash, checks, sometimes payment, and sometimes trade.  This business affects the community because people don't have to go far just to get flowers since this business is in a rural area.  Diane is planning to get a new greenhouse this year.  It is going to be wider—there will be three big rows for the flowers, and two aisles to walk in so it won’t be so crowded.  Also there will more room for more flowers.

So remember, buy some flowers to make somebody in your life happy!

Eagle Track Raceway

By Jasmine Fisher

Have you ever found yourself on a weekend with nothing to do?  Well here's a solution: go to the Eagle Track Raceway to see some exciting races!  There's also great food to eat.  There are nine stockcar races each year and one snowmobile race in the winter.  Make sure you bundle up to stay nice and warm.  The track is not family owned but the men and women who work there act like a family.  The stands have a wonderful view of the races and cars.  The track was built in 1978.

Where the track is located now used to be an airport.  The hours of the racetrack are 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  This track has been in business since 1953. People working at the racetrack are volunteers.  The woman running the track now is the third generation to be involved.  If this sounds like fun then visit the track’s website at www.eagletrackracing.com.  Find the need for speed and go to the Eagle Track Raceway!  Remember to wear sunscreen and bring an umbrella, and be prepared to take a shower after the race—it can be dusty!

Fraternal Order of the Eagles

By Ashley Weaver

Have you ever wanted to get out of the house and have some fun, but don’t know where to go?  Here’s an idea.  How about coming up to the Republic Eagles private club?  The Eagles is a good business because they carry awesome products. They have a lot of business, and they’ve been around probably longer than you!

This club has Friday night dinners that are very tasty. They also serve salad and dessert.

The Eagles management is also in charge of the Eagle Track Raceway concession stand.  They sell food and soft drinks at the track.  They hold the Easter egg hunt up at the racetrack as well.  I have been going to that for about five years.  They are very good with kids and they have a lot of wonderful ideas.  They also hold a Christmas party every year.  I believe that is great for kids whose parents don't have a lot of money.

The Eagles Club has been around for a while now, 108 years!  They normally have the same people come in and they have a great time.  When the hunters come up many of them go to the Eagles.  Unfortunately, to go to the Eagles you have to be a member or else you can be signed in by a family member.  If you don't have any you can have someone who knows you do it.

Both of my parents are members and I think the Eagle's employees are very nice.  They know when the customers have had enough to drink.  They know what the customers want, if you visit them enough, and they are very fast moving.  When I say that I mean when you want something, boom! It's right there.  They are very giving-- they give much of their money to charities, scholarships, and youth and group projects like 4H, rodeos, and community benefits. It seems to me that they love what they do.

So in conclusion, the Republic Eagles is a very nice place to go kick back.  But if I were you, I would get a babysitter so you can stay a while.  The people there are great and I hope you get in your car and come on up.  Trust me, it’s the way to go.

Ferry County Hospital District

Aricka Flodin

If you are an honest person, if you can handle doing teamwork, and you can share the responsibility for caring for patients, then you should work at the Ferry County Memorial Hospital.  This hospital does not allow people under the age of 18 to work there because the state restricts it.  But if you want to you can volunteer.  There are C.N’s, L.P.N's, and R.N's.  They have 25 beds and the nurse's station, doctors, and x-rays are open 24/7.  The kitchen, housekeeping and laundry are open every day and if housekeeping is needed they can be called at any time.

If you want to visit a family member who is in the hospital, you can pretty much visit them whenever you want to.  The hospital works with the assisted living, which has 16 beds.  The hospital also works with the clinic, which is right below the Assisted Living Facility.  The hospital provides general healthcare to all age groups.  If your child and/or other family member is in need of medical assistance you can count on the Ferry County Memorial Hospital to be there to care for you.

Gay's Body and Fender

By Johanna Bremner

It's raining. You are swerving left and right when BAM!  You hit a deer at full speed.  Head on...  Your car is a mess.  Ruined.  There is no way you can fix it yourself or drive it anywhere.  What do you do?

It's a sunny day.  A great day, the greatest day you have had in awhile.  You reach into your pockets in search of your car keys.  They are missing.   Your once gleeful face is replaced by one stricken with panic.  You then run the remaining feet between you and your car.  You stop at the door and peer through the window.  Your keys are laying on the driver's seat.  You know the door is locked but try to open it anyway.  What do you do?

If you are having car troubles, from something as damaging and horrific as hitting a deer to something as simple as locking your car keys in your car, go to Gay's Body and Fender.
Along with fender and body work, Gay's also repairs and replaces windshields.  They specialize in deer collision, being that it makes up about 90% of their total repairs.  If you have a car you need restored, painted etc., Gay's Body and Fender also does custom jobs.

Gay's has been in business for 56 years and under its current owner for about 22, but it has always been in the same family.  It was passed down from father to son in 1986.  The current owner of the business just wants people to know that he enjoys what he does and, if needed, will be able to help with insurance and any problems that may occur.

Gay's Body and Fender accepts cash, credit, and insurance as payment.  Their business address is 789 South Erdman Street and they are open Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

You stand outside your car in the rain, after hitting the deer, and you know what to do.
You stare into your car, through the window, your car keys lay helplessly on the driver’s seat, but you now know what to do. You now know that Gay's Body and Fender can help.

Java Joy's Espresso

By Cody Scriver

It's Friday night and you and a bunch of friends are getting together to watch a movie at your place, when you realize that you didn't get the movie you wanted.  So what do you do?  You get in the car and pedal to the metal to Java Joy’s/The Showhouse.  You get the movie and then you remember to get the pizza and the magic stuff that will keep you awake, coffee!

Java Joy’s/The Showhouse has been under new management a few times, but the building itself has been here a while. It's never had any problems foundation-wise, and the location is just perfect. If you live in Republic you'll drive by it every day!

Java Joy’s has just about everything—what I mean by that is that they have pizza, coffee, movies and a lot more.  The pizza is really good and when I say good I mean AWESOME!!!  They make their own crust and they make their own sauce.  Their coffee is so warm it's like when you bite into a hot cinnamon roll, so smooth and so tasty like sipping a warm cup of hot chocolate.  And that's not all...they have movies also. They have all categories: horror clips, comedy clips, chick flicks, kids movies, action, and documentaries.  They have everything, including video games.

Java Joy’s/The Showhouse is located in Republic W.A. on Main Street. They're about a quarter of a mile past Chevron, before City Hall.

NAPA Parts House of Republic

By Dakota Strine

Napa means quality parts for your car or truck.  The parts are guaranteed or your money back.  This store is full of experienced workers who know what they are doing behind that counter.  Their experience is immeasurable on a scale of one to ten.  Their advertising plan is excellent and they have both reliable workers and excellent prices.

Their advertising plan is on the radio and the TV.  Heck, even all over towns in America.  Everyone shops there for his or her car needs.  Why does everyone do this?  Because Americans see NAPA signs all over the place.  Even on Michael Waltrip’s car, the 34th best car in Nascar.  That is the reason everyone in America shops at NAPA.

Their workers are reliable and hardworking.  Always on time, never late, and absolutely the best.  They are the #1 workers in America.  Never do they give out faulty information or help. Heck, even my father is one of those genuine American workers.

The NAPA prices are marked to market value.  They’re affordable, reliable, and worth it.  Every dime spent at NAPA is a worthwhile investment.  The parts there have no competition.  Not even AutoZone can compete with these prices.

So remember NAPA’s excellent advertising, workers, and prices.

Northern Inn

It is cold snowy day, with six feet of snow on Sherman Pass.  You were just going to stop on the side of the road to sleep when it turns nice and sunny.  You come to beautiful Republic.  You find a hotel and it is the Northern Inn.  They tell you their prices range from $60-$125, which isn't bad.  You decide to stay and this hotel is fantastic.  There is everything right by it and the prices are great for the service you get.

This building has been around Republic since 1993 and is one of the best hotels in Republic with no packaged deal rates. You think the prices are going to be high but they are very reasonable.  Some of the rooms are bigger than others and one even has a Jacuzzi.  The suites have large televisions and king size beds.  This hotel does not have a laundry place but right across the street there is one.  Also there is a meeting room.  The rooms are cleaned everyday so you don't have to worry about other people's germs.  Cathy's (the owner’s) favorite room is number 4, which has one queen size bed and a couch.

So, come to Republic for fossil digging or any other reason and stay at the Northern Inn.  To make reservations for the Northern Inn, contact Cathy at:

Check out time is 11:00 and the best time to check in is 11:00.

Television Association of Republic

By Kenny McGaffey

Don’t you just hate it when the rain is incessantly falling?  Or when it’s so cold your nose drippings freeze?  You have played every board game in your current possession, and now you sit on your couch, snug as a bug, and yet something is missing.   Then all the sudden, without warning, without noise, POOF! appears Bob the T.V. Fairy, with his little speaker boys.  “I know what you need and from whom you can get it,” explained the T.V. Fairy in his deep crackling voice.  "The Republic T.V. Association has exactly what you need.  Still not quite sure?  Just give it some thought.  I even have info that will help you a lot.  Their three specializations are their products, the business, and the employees.

First, they are quite confident in their products.  Their products are better than anyone else's because they are the only providers of cable and broadband in the City of Republic.  They sell their services to customers 18 years and older.  These customers are the blood and soul that keeps the Association on its feet.  They advertise on the community channel, and have special deals in the newspaper.  Their future plans are to reach more of those poor T.V.-less people in Ferry County.  Cable is a popular product, so you needn't worry, you can trust them.

The business is an above-average establishment, their works are reliable and they spend most of their money on equipment to better satisfy the customer.  They are currently in the process of expanding to reach everyone.  Their business is so great that they aren't even in debt.  That's not something you can say about many businesses.  These facts offer only more reassurance to buy their cable.

The employees are the second most important thing in a business.  They keep the business alive and well, and the Republic T.V. Association has a happy-to-help group of employees.  They will answer your questions, give suggestions and relate to your problems.  They will also give you the answers to any connection problems you may be having. The employees are another good reason to give the Republic T.V. Association a call.

Now, can you make your decision?  I can just see what you’re thinking, you just want to run down there and tell them to give you everything that they have to offer.  I'll see you next time you have an entertainment problem!”  POOF!  Now he is gone.  Keep in mind what The T.V. Fairy has said and run down to the Republic Television Association and make a purchase today!

Scott Brother's Coffee

By Austin Roberts

So, you're in the mood for something to get you up.  The day has just begun; it's 6 o'clock, and you need a kick-start for an important day.  Coffee is your answer!  In Ferry County, a person might think, “Is there better coffee than in a Folgers can?"  My friend, you've come to the right place.  If you would like to further your knowledge of Scott Brother's Coffee, you need to know the history and facts of this establishment, learn about their wide selection of coffee, and finally, learn their amazing roasting style.

First, this great business started from a small hobby 25 years ago. In 1977, the Scott Brothers moved to Ferry County.  During a simple, short phone interview, they told me that there weren't any stores where a person could by freshly roasted or ground coffee.  These two brothers would buy coffee beans in Spokane, and made some quality coffee for family and friends.  As they kept roasting and making coffee, the popularity grew, and the business grew to where it is today.  These men are now selling to almost all of Ferry County, and even to customers in Grand Forks, British Columbia.  They sell mainly around the Tri-County area (Ferry, Stevens, and Pend Oreille counties) and have sold to customers across the United States.  In the last two to three years, they have built a new facility for their coffee business, and are able to send the coffee by priority mail.  When the coffee is ordered, it is shipped same day, and usually arrives to the customer within 2-3 days.  Their coffee can also be obtained from Anderson's Grocery of Republic, Washington, and many other Tri-County stores.  The Scott Brothers accept cash and checks at their store, and credit cards online.  Their store is located at 2 Scotts Mountain Road, Curlew, Washington 99118.  Their website is www.scottbroscoffee.comThey can also be reached by telephone: (509) 779-4970.

Now, I'm sure that you, the reader, know the above information is crucial for a customer to get the coffee, but you are thinking...talk about the good stuff: coffee!  Trust me, the Scott Brothers are professionals at the coffee roasting business.  They are what coffee experts would call a specialty or gourmet coffee business.  Specialty coffees are coffees that don't come in the Folgers can, but coffees with an interesting taste.  The Scott Brothers make several coffee roast blends that can fit your liking.  Three blends the Scott Brothers make are the best sellers, which make up half of their coffee sales.  These blends are Ethiopia, Sumatra, and Dave's Blend.  Some other fine blends that they sell are Colombia, Brazil, and Tanzania.  The Scott Brothers also make some of their blends decaffeinated; just ask, and you will be able to have your preference fulfilled.  Also, be sure to try something new when you buy a coffee blend from the Scott Brothers.  They are always looking to keep their steady demand of customers intrigued by giving them new blends and flavors...the Tanzania blend was new when this informative article was written.  The Scott Brothers’ website is always posting the new additions to their coffee family so check out their Internet page once in awhile.  The Scott Brothers’ coffee selection is good for a future consumer to know about.

Now, the Scott Brothers have a methodical way to make the coffee beans into their roasted state.  The brothers get their coffee beans while they are still green, and then take them to their roasting facility.  They then use their flash roaster to get the green coffee beans into their rich, brown form.  This home-built flash roaster roasts coffee beans faster than most machines and because of that, there are more flavors retained and developed in the coffee beans.  The flash roaster method puts the coffee beans on hot air units, also called fluid beds.  The hot air brings the beans to their highest roasting temperature quicker than conventional coffee roasters.  These conventional roasters are "drum" roasters, which are about the size of a washing machine.  These roasters are horizontal rotating drums that have a propane or natural gas heat source underneath.  The drum roasters take 12 to 18 minutes to fully roast the beans, because the major heat source under the drum can scorch the beans, so time has to be used.  The Scott Brothers flash roaster takes only about 7 minutes to roast the coffee, and the hot air units don't scorch the beans.  The Scott Brothers roast about eight pounds of coffee at a time in their roaster, so their small roast size and efficient flash roasting technology ensures the customer (possibly you) will enjoy every batch of coffee they have.  They also have different types of roasts.  The roasts these brothers specialize in are Best Roast, American, Light City, Full City, Vienna, French, and Italian.  The roasts allow for some flavor variation in your favorite coffee blends.  Also, on every package of coffee you buy from the brothers, it shows the roast type, roast date, and the roast master.  You can also call or visit their facility to custom order and buy coffee.  Their address, phone number, and E-mail address are included in the first paragraph. The Scott Brothers flash roaster makes the best-roasted coffee beans.

Trust your coffee needs with the Scott Brothers; you'll be impressed with their sense of professionalism, coffee roasting talent, and their ability to work with the customer to give that person what they want in their coffee.  These men are always ready to make you an invigorating batch of coffee!
